ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the effect of converting free space into an anisotropic medium by the creation of a plasma medium in the presence of a static magnetic field. It develops higher-order differential equations for fields in a time-varying magnetoplasma medium. The main effect of switching the medium is the splitting of the original wave (incident wave) into new waves whose frequencies are different from the frequency of the incident wave. The strength and the direction of the static magnetic field affect the number of waves generated, their frequencies, damping rates, and their power densities. These aspects for L, R, O, and X waves are discussed. The shift ratio and efficiency of the frequency shifting operation can be controlled by the strength and direction of the static magnetic field. The switching of the plasma medium in the presence of an arbitrarily directed magnetic field creates many more frequency-shifted modes.
