ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the formalization of optical-electrical interfaces using Discrete Event Systems Specifications (DEVS) and the formalization of basic elements of an Optical Network-on-Chip (ONoC). It proposes a novel approach that enables: the possibility to formalize very recent technologies using DEVS formalism and the use of this formalization to validate and debug complex systems as optical-electrical interfaces. The chapter presents the related work and provides basic concepts with DEVS definition as well as optical interfaces and photonic devices. It describes the methodology used in this work with optical network examples. The chapter presents the formalization of opto-electrical and electro-optical interfaces and basic passive elements of an ONoC using the DEVS formalism. It provides the DEVS description of a bidirectional point to point optical connection. The chapter shows the DEVS description of a simple 4-port optical switch.
