ABSTRACT

In next generation Internet, converged heterogeneous broadband wired and wireless subnetworks and various terminal equipments will be interconnected [1]. As an example, the backbone transit network may be implemented by IP/T-MPLS (Transport Multiprotocol Transport Switching) [2], IP/Carrier Ethernet [3], or IP/WDM (wavelength-divisioning multiplexing) technology with xDSL or PON (passive optical network) access loop, while the home/office intranet may be implemented based on IEEE 802.3 Fast/Gigabit Ethernet or IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (LAN) (i.e., WiFi) technology [4]. Each subnetwork may have a different control plane function, such as signaling protocol for connection establishment or resource reservation with connection admission control (CAC). Since most home/office intranets are currently implemented with connectionless and contention-based Ethernet or wireless LAN, the quality of service (QoS)-guaranteed service provisioning is strictly limited without well-designed CAC.
