ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces key population concepts that describe qualitatively and quantitatively the evolution of acute infectious disease outbreaks and the current state of endemic scenarios, and variation in such across key population subgroups. Such concepts include the incidence proportion, attack rate, secondary attack rate, and the hazard function (or force of infection). We briefly note how these key quantities might be numerically estimable from population or sample data.
