ABSTRACT

To most people, the word “editor” usually connotes a literary editor. However, preparing technical documents requires two types of editing. The literary editor is sometimes referred to as a copy editor or, perhaps, production editor. The other type of editor can be called the technical editor. The literary editor’s responsibilities. In sorting the various aspects of editing, we may find it simpler to first define the aspects of primary concern to the literary editor. The technical editor should have a general familiarity with the technical subject being presented, and should be thoroughly familiar with the technical terminology used to describe it. To effectively play the role of the reader, the technical editor concentrates on various aspects of the technical document. Another primary responsibility of the technical editor is to develop writers into better writers. This responsibility is at least as important as any other in producing quality documents.
