ABSTRACT

The field experiments were adopted here because it was difficult to simulate the thick and loose sediments in the laboratory. The experimental site was selected in the Chongwan zone of the west dyke of Grand Canal (pile No. 49+580-50+335) (Fig. 1) after extensive investigation. According to the engineering investigation data, the soil profile here mainly includes three layers. The upper layer is a loose sediment in quaternary with thickness of about 5 m. The second layer below is clayey sludge with the almost same thickness. And the lower layer is silty sandy loam. The geological conditions of the site meet the requirements of the experiment well.
