ABSTRACT

Figure 1 shows the geometry and dimensions of the column specimens. The cross section of prototype and model are 2.0 × 1.5 m and 0.5 × 0.36 m, respectively. The corresponding wall thickness is 400 mm and 120 mm, respectively. The height of the column (i.e., the distance from the horizontal actuator loading point to the top of the RC footing) of prototype and model are 5.8 m and 1.44 m, respectively. The properties of the specimens are listed in Table 1. In order to compare the seismic performance of hollow RC rectangular bridge columns subjected to uniaxial bending and biaxial bending, the reversed cyclic tests of two identical specimens were conducted under uniaxial bending with axial load and biaxial bending with axial load. Note that the uniaxial bending load was imposed in the weak axis of specimen S1 and in the strong axis of specimen S2. Two model columns S3 and S4, which were identical to S1 and S2, respectively were tested under biaxial bending.
