ABSTRACT

This paper interprets basic TB theory in details and provides a simplified method for engineers to quickly evaluate building’s dynamic performance.

2 THE TIMOSHENKO BEAM THEORY

Based on the Hamilton’s principle, the lateral deflection (w) and rotation (Φ) of a TB conform to a fourth order spatial differential equation for each natural vibration mode. G and I are the equivalent shear modulus and moment of inertia of the TB model with plane area A equal to that

1 INTRODUCTION

Hong Kong, the city well known for its high density of population and high-rise buildings, is facing the challenge of implementing a seismic design standard of building that never exists in Hong Kong before. Detail assessment of seismic performance for such extensive building stock is practically impossible without sufficient time and resources. Hence, a simple screening tool for rapid seismic performance assessment to produce reasonably accurate results is a viable solution.
