ABSTRACT

In this article, an approach of rail head inspection using ultrasonic guided waves is proposed and the experiment schemes and experiment result are provided.

2 FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS

Finite Element Method (FEM) was employed to study the propagation characteristics and mode shapes of guided waves in rail, since FEM provides the visual result of wave propagation and wave motion. The geometry was a full scale model of Rail P60. The element size was about 3 mm to meet the requirements in wave propagation modeling (Alleyne & Cawley 1991, Moser et al. 1999).
