ABSTRACT

High Performance Concrete (HPC) is a concrete mixture, which possess high strength and high durability when compared to conventional concrete. HPC contains one or more of cementious materials such as silica fume, fly ash and ground granulated blast furnace slag and usually with a superplasticizer. HPC is not a special type of concrete. HPC is similar to that of a conventional cement concrete using some mineral and chemical admixtures like silica fume and superplasticizer to enhance the durability, workability and strength qualities to a very high extent. HPC will have a low water cement ratio of 0.2 to 0.45. HPC almost always has a higher strength than normal concrete. Super Plasticizers and silica fume are usually used to make these concretes fluid and workable. The problem of punching shear strength in slabs subjected to concentrated loads has received added emphasis due to it’s importance in connection with Flat slab floor system. Joseph (Clarke and Birjandi, 1990) presented a design procedure for slab subjected to concentrated loads. Clark and Birjandi (Lovrovich and McLean, 1990) investigated punching shear resistance for light weight aggregate concrete slabs. Tested five different light weight aggregates and the results showed that code provisions are unnecessarily conservative. John and David (Appleton, 1980) summarized the results of experimentation of punching shear strength on reinforced concrete slabs with varying span to depth ratios.
