ABSTRACT

The intention of the current research is, therefore, to investigate the effect of corrosion on hydrogen concentration and mechanical properties of steel. To be specific, immersion test, instead of hydrogen charging test, was used to simulate corrosion behaviour. The most common solutions for hydrogen damage simulation is hydrochloride acid (HCl) (Eggum, 2013). Hydrogen contents within steel were measured after immersion through Barnacle cell (DeLuccia & Berman, 1981). In addition, microstructures of corroded samples will be analysed through scanning electron microscope (SEM), to capture the initiation of hydrogen embrittlement cracks. Tensile tests are also conducted to investigate the changes on mechanical properties for steel under different corrosion rate and hydrogen concentration.
