ABSTRACT

The practice of research in Latin America faces the usual difficulties in responding to the lack of firm policies for its development, including the allocation of resources. This was analysed in depth by the Ibero American Confederation of Family Medicine at the fourth summit, held in Asuncion in 2011. The number and quality of reviewed and indexed journals specific to the discipline continue to grow. A meeting of editors as part of the Research Workshop was held in Montevideo, marking the beginning of interconnected work on the development of journals in each country. There is some tension between a vision that targets English journals with a high impact factor (IF) for the publication of Latin American primary care research, and a vision that emphasises the need for the best papers to be published in local journals and in the languages of the region as a way to enhance their development and diffusion in Ibero America.
