ABSTRACT

The chronology of a homicide that goes unsolved for several years may be classified as still active, but often goes from a proactive investigation to a reactive investigation. This means that work is completed on the case only when new leads come in. The unsolved case is shoved back in priorities to allow more investigative time for recent cases with greater solvability factors. At some point, the unsolved case is sent to a cold case unit if the agency has one.
