ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT The mechanical property evolution of main cable steel wires under corroded state is a critical issue for the durability study of suspension bridges. In this paper, the current accelerated corrosion experiment of main cable steel wires under different tension level was designed. The statistical characteristics and evolution rules of corrosion morphologies under different tension level and corrosion time were observed by the means of superhigh magnification lens zoom 3D microscope. Then, the load-deformation curves, yield load and ultimate load of corroded wires under different corrosion time and different strain levels were obtained through the mechanical performance tests. The test results show that the maximum cross-section loss rate has a great correlation with the corrosion time and strain level. Finally, the ultimate load recommended formula of steel wires corresponds to corrosion time and tension level was established. The results can be used for long-term performance evaluation of the main cable of suspension bridges.
