ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT A monitoring system has been installed on the road bridge over the Po River at Borgoforte (Italy) as a base for a non-structural risk mitigation tool. A specific feature of the monitoring system is that it is devoted to measure environmental conditions rather than the state of the structure. Measured values are taken as initial conditions for evolution scenarios of the actions and, through a structural model of the bridge, of the safety conditions of the bridge, thus allowing to decide about the necessity of closing it to traffic in due time. Particular care is devoted to procedures for risk management, that is, a system of thresholds and consequent actions. The whole chain is able to prevent casualties and, by reducing loads connected with traffic, possibly also avoid collapse of the structure.
