ABSTRACT Structural monitoring (e.g. structural measurement and damage detection) and inspections have been widely applied as part of structural maintenance. However, the potential of using the obtained information is not yet fully exploited to update the structural reliability and support the maintenance and operation strategy. This paper describes the foundations, limitations, and characteristics of measurement, inspection, and damage detection modeling approaches and their utilization for the structural integrity management. A new structural measurement modeling approach is developed by connecting the damage model uncertainty realizations with the target system damage probabilities. Inspection and damage detection modeling based on signal/Damage Indicator Value distributions are introduced and used in conjunction with Bayesian updating. The approaches are applied to update the reliability of a generic structural system. The effects of model uncertainty distribution parameters (e.g. expected value and standard deviation) and signal/Damage Indicator Value thresholds are also investigated and discussed.
