ABSTRACT The seismic performance of the designed structure is usually checked through a nonlinear dynamic analysis by using the response spectrum compatible earthquake motion (RSCEM), but we have to assign a proper Fourier phase to simulate RSCEM. The nonlinear response of designed structure is strongly affected by this assigned Fourier phase. Fourier phase of earthquake motion possess strong uncertainty due to the inherent feature of uncertainties of earthquake mechanism and propagating path of earthquake wave. The uncertainty of earthquake motion phase is evaluated by using a stochastic process model developed by modifying the fractional Brownian motion. We will select enough kinds of Fourier phase to generate RSCEMs and failure probability will be achieved based on Monte Carlo method considering the uncertainty of Fourier phase. The parameters controlling the stochastic process model for generating Fourier phases will also be properly evaluated to understand their influence on the structural failure probability.
