ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Swanswell Viaduct dates from 1970 and, like many highway structures of its age, has experienced a deterioration in its condition including leaking expansion joints and drainage, and reinforced concrete defects. In addition, the parapet containment does not conform to current standards. This paper describes the steps taken to prepare for and design a refurbishment scheme to address these problems. These include: a desk study and risk review, structural investigations, targeted assessment of key elements, appraisal of options for the deck-edge and parapet upgrade, developing the detailed design, replacing the deck joints and drainage, and providing sustainable solutions that will be easier to maintain in the future.
