ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Chloride induced corrosion and Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is one of typical deterioration in concrete structures. It is needed to shift and to establish the preventive maintenance since it is easy to cause early deterioration under severe conditions. In mountainous areas and cold climate areas, some cases of significantly deteriorated concrete structures in the short time have been reported due to de-icing salts. The combined deterioration due to ASR and steel corrosion caused by de-icing salts may occur. Consequently, it is urgent to consider the countermeasure for them. In this paper, in order to clarify the deterioration situation of the combined deterioration due to ASR and chloride induced corrosion, the field survey was conducted. The effect of de-icing salts and Alkali-silica reaction damage on steel corrosion was investigated. As the results, it was clear that cracks caused by Alkali-silica reaction promoted the penetration of chloride ions, which may promote chloride induced corrosion.
