ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the use of construction labour, material and plant cost ratios to develop a framework for evaluating the choice of construction materials and technologies. It examines the drivers and factors relevant to the selection of materials and technology for the construction of buildings in several countries around the world. The chapter describes decisions on appropriate materials and technology by comparing the cost ratios for labour, materials and plant to uncover patterns of use in 27 countries. A series of construction cost ratios is computed based on selected basic inputs necessary for the construction of buildings. Cost ratios for materials, labour and equipment were computed and analysed to compare the different proportion of the input factors for construction internationally. In comparison to a cost performance study by D. Q. Mills on medium-rise commercial buildings, the basic factor inputs and cost ratios proposed here have clearly demonstrated how labour and material costs affect the choice of construction systems.
