ABSTRACT

Considered as one of the first attempts for a theoretical definition of ‘mega form’, which later evolved into the generalization of mega-structure, Fumihiko Maki sought to clarify and define the concept of mega-structure as

And came to underline one of its most important features:

The increase of dimensional, structural and functional difference of these two moments of the megastructure, recovered some of the concepts previously developed, in 1931, by Le Corbusier’s project “Fort l’Empereur” in Algiers. It had the possibility of filling the main structure with different subunits, and seemed now to delegate in the future inhabitants of the structure, the possibility of construction and real final definition of the basic cells of the project. This concept, together with the proposed dialogue between a hierarchically dominant and permanent structure, containing a set of subordinate accommodations, ephemeral and open to spontaneous local participation, would be a controversial vision within the architectural discipline.
