ABSTRACT

Appropriately applied local anesthetic techniques offer additional perioperative analgesia, muscle relaxation, and anesthetic-sparing effects. Local anesthetic techniques, in general, are still underutilized in small animals when compared with large animal practice. Local anesthetic agents not only provide local and regional anesthesia and muscle relaxation but, when used parenterally as part of a CRI, also have profound systemic effects. This chapter describes the pharmacology of local anesthetic agents and the different injection techniques for local anesthesia.
