ABSTRACT

Utilizing (light-emitting diodes) (LEDs) and photobiomodulation (PBM; previously known as low-level light therapy [LLLT]) for analgesia and healing has become a routine procedure within small and large animal practices in the last half decade. The recognition and application of light energy for healing are not new. Light energy has had numerous applications in health care throughout history; to date over 500 randomized double-blinded placebo-controlled studies have been published concerning PBM’s medical applications. Lasers are the most refined form of light energy. Low-level lasers have been used extensively in physical medicine throughout Europe and Canada for many years prior to FDA approval for clinical application in the setting of musculoskeletal pain in the USA.
