ABSTRACT

Acupuncture is the most extensively researched modality under the umbrella of both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM) and has known local, segmental, central, and autonomic effects, many of which have the potential to strongly reduce nociceptive signals and pain perception. It has beneficial, studied effects for treating both acute and chronic pain, in addition to helping to prevent ‘wind-up’ or central sensitization that occurs in chronic pain states.
