ABSTRACT

Tracheoesophageal fistulas (TEFs) are very difficult conditions to manage due to technical challenges during surgery and have a high risk of recurrence after surgery. There are scarce reports of successful repairs of recurrent TEFs in adult patients. We report an adult patient with previously undiagnosed achalasia who was referred for recurrent TEF after two prior surgeries. We describe our staged management with laparoscopic Heller myotomy followed by the delayed repair of the TEF. Our novel technique of using a full thickness button of the anterior esophageal wall to successfully repair the fistula is also described.
