ABSTRACT

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection that is caused by the tapeworm Echinococcus. It is endemic in agrarian areas, particularly in developing Asia and the Middle East, and carries a large socioeconomic burden. Pulmonary echinococcus accounts for 20%–30% of all reported cases but remains rare in the United States. We present the surgical treatment of a patient who presented to a large United States urban county hospital with pulmonary echinococcus. There are a variety of techniques that can be used in the management of echinococcosis. The central tenant of hydatid management is safe, complete removal without intrathoracic contamination.
