ABSTRACT

In the armed forces, limited time necessitates that leaders are informed of the bottom line at the beginning of a briefing. This principle is captured in the acronym bottom line up front. This chapter describes some of the many types of analysis conducted in the military and how each of those analyses is used. It also describes the challenges associated with communicating analysis including time, depth of analysis, complexity of the problem, and vagaries of multiple audiences. The chapter explores some techniques for presenting analysis using PowerPoint as a communication tool. The types of analysis used in the armed forces are many. Some of them are as follows: requirement analysis, analysis of alternatives, cost analysis, personnel analysis, budgetary analysis, combat modeling, simulation, logistics and medical analysis, and ad hoc analysis. Animation can also be used in presentations, but should be used sparingly and only when it adds to the overall presentation of the analysis.
