ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the current asphaltene-mitigation strategies such as the injection of asphaltene inhibitors, the control of operating conditions, and the application of internal pipeline coatings are discussed. In addition, the most commonly adopted asphaltene-remediation approaches, including solvent wash and mechanical removal, are reviewed. At the end of the chapter, the limitations of the current assessment of conventional asphaltene inhibitors are demonstrated. The improper assessments would not only neglect chemicals targeting the actual asphaltene-deposition problem but also provide misleading results on the prevention of asphaltene deposition. Therefore, insights are provided on the development of a new generation of asphaltene inhibitors targeting the actual asphaltene-deposition problems.
