ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the difference between levels of happiness among Chinese and Indonesian college students. It examines the levels of happiness among Chinese and Indonesian students, both of societies known to have a strong collectivistic culture. The chapter argues that there was no difference in happiness between the Indonesian and Chinese students, nor was happiness among the Indonesian and Chinese students influenced by their sex. As members of collectivistic cultures, both Chinese students and Indonesian students represent a similar but, nevertheless, unique manifestation of happiness. The chapter seeks to explore the difference of levels of happiness among Chinese and Indonesian college students. For the Chinese, personal actions and choices must be governed by morality, and for them a meaningful life is a virtuous life. The Chinese students also believed that while a person should be autonomous, they must eventually accept what fate brings.
