ABSTRACT

The steady one-dimensional heat transfer problem illustrated in Figure 8.1 consists of heat diffusion (i.e., heat conduction) along a constant-area rod with heat convection to the surroundings. The ends of the rod are maintained at the constant temperatures T1 and T2• An energy balance on a differential element of the rod, presented in Section II.6, yields the following second-order boundary-value ordinary differential equation (ODE):
