ABSTRACT

The solution of Eqs. (9.7) and (9.8) is the functionf(x,y). This function must satisfy a set of boundary conditions on the boundaries of the closed solution domain. These boundary conditions may be of the Dirichlet type (i.e., specified values off), the Neumann type (i.e., specified values of the derivative of f), or the mixed type (i.e., a specified combination off and its derivative). The basic properties of finite difference methods for solving equilibrium problems governed by elliptic PDEs are presented in this chapter.
