9.6 ITERATIVE METHODS OF SOLUTION Direct solutions of the system equation approximating the Laplace equation for the twodimensional heat diffusion problem, Eq. (9.28), are presented in Section 9.4. As discussed at the end of that section, direct solutions require excessive computational effort and computer memory as the number of grid points increases. In such cases, iterative methods should be employed.
