ABSTRACT

This discusses the Cold case is a term used to identify an unsolved crime that has been extant for a period of time with all logical leads having been covered and solvability is considered unlikely or very questionable. Cold cases are typically assigned low priority by investigating agencies. In one case which remained unsolved for 21 years, a teenage associate of the young female sexual homicide victim bragged to a school friend that he had killed a young girl in his neighbourhood. Police agencies frequently find themselves having to reduce the amount of investigative activity which can be directed toward unsolved cold cases due to budget, manpower, technical, and other resource restrictions. One of the first steps in working unsolved cold cases and the development of a Multi-Agency Task Force is to gauge the level of interest and potential commitment that might be received from the law enforcement community, the prosecutor’s office, and the media.
