ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the Joint Task Force for Sexual Assault Prevention and Response as a matter expert and action officer for the Task Force, and assisted in writing the health care portions of the policy. The US Army has been very progressive in addressing issues related to sexual assault investigation. This investigative organization was officially formed in 1918 as a division within the Military Police Corps. Military forensic odontologists are forensically trained dentists with expertise in identification of decedents via the deceased’s dentition and dental x-rays. The Sexual Assault Forensic Exam is a critical component of forensic evidence collection in a sexual assault case. It is a detailed and complicated examination that requires knowledge of forensic evidence collection from the body and forensic photography. Military services should consider basing their sexual assault programs under the larger umbrella of Violence Prevention and Response, and placing that umbrella over the purview of their Armed Forces Public Health divisions.
