ABSTRACT

Health education is a critical component of patient care, whether it focuses on health promotion, health maintenance or illness prevention. There are many research articles in the Arab world indicating the pressing need for patient educational materials for Arab clients. The deficit in knowledge acquisition has led to the Arab countries falling behind many of the world’s developing countries in terms of science, technology and patient education. Patient education is a fairly new topic of discussion in the Arab world, and knowledge about the best methods to impart education is only recently becoming available. In populations with large numbers of illiterate or poorly literate citizens, developing strong patient education programs can be especially difficult. Healthcare providers and researchers must respect the religious and cultural values of the community in which they are working, and remember to consider the basic values of the community members when developing patient education tools.
