ABSTRACT

372Plant-based material has been proposed and potential alternatives to chemical pesticides for safe and environment-friendly pest management options. These plant-based products act as antifeedant, fumigant, growth regulator, repellent, and a direct mortality factor against insect pests. The chemical components present in plants have these activities and show promise in managing pests in agriculture. Recently, researchers’ interest has focused on the detection of the chemical compounds present in plants that have insecticidal properties. Even though there is a lot of information available on this field of science, but the information is scattered in various journals and other publications. So, it requires the exhaustive compilation. This chapter will give an overview about some of the important phytochemicals, which play an important role to protect themselves against herbivory, pathogenic microbes, and various abiotic stresses as well as specific plant responses to pathogen attack.
