ABSTRACT

Omega-3 Poly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFA) are a kind of nutritional lipids and a family of unsaturated fatty acids, which contains a final carbon-carbon double bond at the n-3 position, e.g., the third bind from the methyl end of the fatty acid. Additionally, it is used as nutritional additives in various human foods. Since marine oils are complex mixtures of fatty acids with varying chain lengths and degrees of different unsaturation, so separation of individual fatty acids is challenging for the production of highly concentrated Omega-3 components. Solvent extraction is a method of separation of various biological compounds from natural resources. In case of solvent extraction without chemical reaction, mass transfer rate depends on the effective contacting between feed and solvent and mixing between these two phases; whereas in the solvent extraction with chemical reaction, the mass transfer rate depends on the reaction rate and mixing in the contacting system.
