ABSTRACT

In 2010, the number of domestic and international tourists who visited Sabah amounted to ~2.63 million. The Lower Kinabatangan area is theming with wildlife and encompasses a network of conservation areas that is home to some of Malaysia’s native peoples, for example, Orang Sungai “River People.” Although there are studies done worldwide that identify issues of wildlife value orientations there is a gap of in-depth probing for the beliefs on the value of wildlife as a community-based ecotourism product by the local community and tourist. The aims of this chapter are perceptions of local residents’ toward wildlife value as a tourism product in a community-based setting.

“The value of wildlife is seen at several levels according to an individual’s perception of its personal or group uses”
