ABSTRACT

Road transport emissions have straight forward effects on air quality requirements, at local, regional and even global scales [1-3]. Transport is responsible for around a quarter of EU greenhouse gas emissions making it the second biggest greenhouse gas-emitting sector after energy generation [4]. Due to the vehicles engine internal combustion and fossil fuels usage, transport has become a significant source of air pollutants including CO, CO2, volatile organic compounds, NOx, NO2, O3, total suspended particles and particulate matter (PM). Several epidemiological investigations have studied the toxicity of certain pollutants resulted from traffic emission with acute and chronic health effects [5-7]. Results cannot be generalized as the impact of a highway depends on vehicle characteristics and number, local climatology and use of land.
