ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses physical model that can be used as a planning tool for the design and investigate the performance of the horizontal subsurface flow constructed wetlands using three bed substrates, since natural gravel, shredded tires pieces, and plastic pipes pieces. It explores the design and training of artificial neural networks (ANNs) and statistical models to represent the field data of the study. The book provides the background information on models used to predict constructed wetlands performance, various wetland types, and wetland components. It also presents the hydraulic representation of the physical model, removal rate constants, and a brief description for ANNs. The book also discusses the performance evaluation for studied pollutants treatment through the three bed media and its variation with length, loading rate, hydraulic retention time, and discharge through steady stage.
