ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an overview which explores participatory approaches developed and used to manage resources (soil, water, and crop, nutrient) and to establish diverse and profitable agricultural systems on salt affected soils. The overview especially deals with farmers participation in reclamation of alkali or sodic soils (with and without water logging) as these are synonymously referred (but hereinafter only referred as sodic soils) and their matching management practices, post reclamation management, developing salt tolerant varieties and integrated farming system for waterlogged sodic soils. Although the pH can be brought down with the application of gypsum and even crops can be grown for a year or two but thereafter soil again becomes sodic. Since such a situation is spread over large areas especially in Uttar Pradesh (India), a need was felt to develop an alternate approach for the sustainable reclamation and management of such lands.
