ABSTRACT

Heracleum candolleanum (Apiaceae) is a plant used by Kani tribes of Western Ghat region for inflammatory relief. The plant is commonly known as “Vatamparathi” and in siddha it is termed as chittelam. The plant is an aromatic, perennial, and rhizomatous herb mostly found in 6000 feet above sea level. The anti-platelet activity of methanol extract of root, leaf, and seed was studied using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in different concentrations (50–500 μg/ml). Among them methanol extract of root showed dose-dependent anti-platelet activity with maximum activity 89.54% at 500 μg/ml concentration compared with that of standard drug aspirin. In conclusion, these observations suggested that root extract of H. candolleanum exhibits excellent levels of inhibitory action on platelets in vitro (secretion and platelet aggregation suppression) and may be due to the presence of phytochemical contents of plant.
