ABSTRACT

Plants which can be employed for therapeutic purpose or used to extract active components and bearing the curative medicinal properties are referred to as medicinal plants according to World Health Organization (WHO). Plant parts or the extracts have been found to be used since time immemorial for therapeutic benefits throughout the globe as preventive or curative purposes against various ailments and are depicted broadly in well-recognized literatures related to Ayurveda, Chinese, and Unani medicines. Archeologists found the corroboration in support of medicinal plants utilization by Neanderthal man more than 50,000 years ago. Since prehistoric periods, people of Europe, Asia, and American subcontinents knew regarding the usefulness of medicinal herbs. Also, historians depicted the existence of herbal medicine in garden present in Pisa and Italy during the 16th century. It is evident that as the first nation, the Canadians used numerous of plant species for their pharmacological roles in various diseases and still advocate the utilization of pharmaceutical plants in modern times. Majority of the people still believe the importance of herbs for their pharmacological benefits.
