ABSTRACT

CHAPTER SUMMARY Considerable advances in glucose monitoring during the last four decades have resulted in highly evolved blood glucose meters, noninvasive glucose monitoring (NGM) devices and continuous glucose monitoring systems (CGMS). Glucose monitoring is a prerequisite for diabetes management, enabling glucose regulation within the desired physiological level. Minimally invasive CGMS have also led to tremendous improvements in diabetic management as shown by the significant lowering of glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) in adults with type 1 diabetes. Next-generation CGMS with advanced features including non-invasive capability will motivate users to take all preventive steps to manage this chronic disease.
