ABSTRACT

In hospitals, training design and methods are frequently optimised for the linear system that many people imagine health care to be. Like other processes and procedures, however, training must be developed with adequate understanding of work-as-done, rather than work-as-imagined. Inappropriate training, poorly conceptualised training or training ineffectively applied can add an unwelcome layer of complexity to an already complicated health care system, with little discernible benefit. At best, this can be a poor use of resources. At worst, training can completely misfire, and cause serious harm.
