The history of socioeconomic and political development in modern society has been closely intertwined with the human ability to transform and use energy in all its forms and make it accessible both widely and efficiently. The use and the possible transformation of energy have a substantial impact on society, the economy, and natural environments. Climate change further complicates the energy challenge.
