ABSTRACT
Megacities are important centers of population concentration and growth, and derive their prosperity and importance through their long-standing commercial connections with the rest of the world. Most of these cities are located on or near a coast, which facilitates the flow of trade and contributes to their prosperity. Others are located near major rivers that serve as a channel for commerce (De Sherbinin et al., 2007).
