ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the applications of visible light communication (VLC) for indoor positioning, from a professional lighting industry perspective. It explores the benefits and drawbacks of combining lighting and localization capabilities. Enabled by the developments in technology and the potential for new products, the market share of light-emitting diode (LED) light sources has grown tremendously over the last couple of years and by now has reached more than a third of the overall lighting revenue. Technological feasibility at an acceptable cost, devices with native capabilities to modulate light, the need for improved controllability of lighting systems, and overall user interest makes VLC and indoor positioning a strong match. A professional lighting system can vary significantly in dimension and features, according to the size of the installation and the specific application requirements. The industry and warehouse market segments include installations in both manufacturing and storage facilities.
