ABSTRACT

Within the literature on mental health and educational experiences among youth, little attention has been paid to the factors that influence Black students’ success or failure outside of cultural stereotypes as the inferior minority (Whaley & Noel, 2013). African American adolescents’ successful transition to adulthood is contingent on their academic achievement, employable skill and abilities, and their physical and mental health. This chapter reviews the literature on Black adolescents’ mental health problems, their educational experiences, and information about the relationship between mental health and educational experiences among adolescents. The chapter then provides data on the relationship between mental disorders and educational experiences among Black adolescents, specifically.
