ABSTRACT

The emerging generation of the solar cell is the dye sensitized solar cell. This chapter briefly discusses the working operation and constructional parts of the dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC). It also discusses the various performance parameters of the dye solar cell such as substrate, semiconductor, sensitizer, electrolyte, and counter electrode. The chapter explores that the DSSCs have less costly fabrication, less maintenance cost, are environmentally friendly, and are less sensitive to impurities. Although the application of the metal complex sensitizer causes environmental problems, natural sensitizers are the best alternative as these are nonpolluting and less costly. These have less adsorption on the surface of the semiconductor which causes less efficiency of the cell. The performance of the dye solar cell depends on various fabrication parameters such as transparent conductive oxide, semiconductor, sensitizer, and electrolyte.
